ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION It is estimated that 12.8-36.8% of people around the world will experience a serious and enduring mental health condition during their lifetime.1 In contrast to transient and/or mild mental health symptoms, conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar aff ective disorder, personality disorders and chronic depression (‘severe mental health problems’ – SMHP) can potentially take a chronic and persistent course, and can be life-changing. Many people experiencing mental health problems, particularly in lessdeveloped countries, do not receive adequate treatment and follow-up care.2
