ABSTRACT

To give the user the best possible support for the task and to meet specific user demands, systems should be adaptable. The adaptation may involve the positioning, presentation and naming of the system's interface elements, as well as the system's behavior, the sequence of dialogue steps, and the definition of parameter default values. The adaptation can be based on different rationales. One approach is to provide exhaustive adaptation possibilities for all interface features of the application, regardless of their potential usefulness to the user. This chapter analyzes the given application for adaptations required to fit the application to the user's needs. It also analyzes adaptive and adaptable concepts in existing prototypes or systems and considers opinions expressed by human factors experts. The chapter uses two versions of Excel for the design of an extended application with new adaptation features.
