ABSTRACT

Advanced Technology Testing Helicopter System (ATTHeS) is mainly utilized for handling-qualities research and helicopter in-flight simulation. A good initial response and high bandwidth capability of ATTHeS was emphasized in the MFCS design. For helicopter in-flight simulation purposes, a linear derivative simulation model with specific nonlinear extensions has been developed. Specific control systems of the helicopter to be simulated can be embedded. The high fidelity of the simulation was proven in flight tests. In addition, ATTHeS is used for test pilot training at various European test pilot schools. The most promising and also challenging method of a control system design for in-flight simulation is to force the basic helicopter to respond on the pilot's inputs as an explicitly calculated command model. The performance and accuracy of the model-following control system is highly dependent on the accuracy of the modelled dynamics of the host helicopter, but additional components contribute to the overall performance.
