After death, brachiopod shells are incorporated as live, or in situ (autochthonous), or transported (allochthonous) thanatocoenoses. Shell beds and loose live and dead shells permit observation of partial or nearly complete brachiopod shell degradation through stages of maceration, boring, fragmentation, dissolution, degradation and replacement at the macroscopic and microscopic level.
