ABSTRACT

Five brachiopod assemblages ranging in age from Early Bashkirian to Podolskian have been identified from the Carboniferous of NW Serbia. The four older assemblages are known from the Likodra Nappe, and the youngest assemblage (Podolskian – the Ivovik assemblage) is from the Jadar region (Krupanj Unit). The oldest faunas, from Vlaska Reka, are dominated by species of Choristites typical of the Late Early Bashkirian of the Donets Basin and the Perm Priurals such as C. medovensis, C. convexa and C. plana. A small fauna from Ostrikovaca with Choristites cf. medovensis and C. cf. convexa as, as well as Linoproductus cf. gasensis, and Buxtonia cf. mosquensis, indicates a Late Early to Middle Bashkirian age. A Late Bashkirian fauna is typified by diverse assemblages which include species of Antiquatonia, Brachythyrina and Martinia, as found at Reljaca and Ovcarevac. A distinctive Early Moscovian (Vereian) fauna, represented by assemblages from Obradovici, include such genera as Meekella, Isogramma, Megachonetes, Karavankina, Reticulatia, Crurithyris, Martinia and Stenoscisma. This assemblage shares genera with the Early Moscovian faunas of Spain to the west, and the contemporaneous faunas of European Russia to the east. The youngest assemblage of Late Moscovian age (Podolskian-age, also constrained by fusulinids, includes Orthotetes cf. plana, Neochonetes carboniferus, and advanced Choristites species with fine branching costae.
