ABSTRACT

I first met Larry Markus at the highly successful symposium on “Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems” held at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, 27-30 December 1965. This symposium was dedicated to Solomon Lefschetz for the many contributions to the field over some 20 years, and Professor Lefschetz himself gave the first presentation at the symposium. The proceedings appeared as a book [1], edited by J.K. Hale and J.P. La Salle. Subsequently I spent the summer of 1966 at the University of Minnesota in the Electrical Engineering Department, seeing a lot of Larry Markus and E. Bruce Lee at this time.
