ABSTRACT

With the growing awareness of the environment since the sixties opinions on the development of infrastructure in general have changed in the Netherlands. One realized that any form of development will have consequences on the surroundings. The development process has become less individual and is presently considered as part of a much larger framework. Apart from the actual development attention should be paid to the consequences of the infrastructural development process on the surroundings. In this context both the immediate surroundings of the civil engineering constructions and the surroundings of the origin of the constructional elements should be taken into account with an integrated approach. Aspects of functionality, environment and economy are weighed against each other.
