ABSTRACT

There are many interactions between soil, water and structure in a revetment or sea-wall, leading to various failure mechanisms. Figure 1 gives an overview of the relevant failure mechanisms for a revetment. Several of these failure mechanisms are not yet completely open for computations, but a qualitative understanding can already help to prevent an unbalanced design. Insight in phenomena and failure mechanisms is paramount in designing a reliable protection. It is even more important than having an accurate formula to compute dimensions of some part of the protection structure.
