ABSTRACT

The purpose of Chapter 8 is to introduce the reader to the practice of horticultural therapy as it applies to the therapeutic model. Within the therapeutic model, the focus is on therapy outcomes as they relate to both psychological and physical aspects, which are implemented to assist individuals recovering from illness and injury. It is important to note that psychological and physical outcomes within the therapeutic model occur in a variety of very diverse settings, with a broad range of people, who are seeking recovery and positive health outcomes. Introduction of the treatment team, assessment, and the goal-setting process within a horticultural therapy setting are discussed. Design considerations and distinctive use of space within a horticultural therapy program are mentioned, as are considerations for the horticultural therapist facilitating programming within this model. Specific examples, noted as exhibits, within the chapter bring perspective to the unique and varied treatment approaches that apply in a therapeutic model.
