ABSTRACT

The reproductive physiology of marine mammals is a diverse topic, yet most information has been collected from a few species of cetaceans and pinnipeds, often in aquarium settings. During the following discussions, we use one or two species to make generalizations about the reproductive function of entire families. These generalizations must be interpreted with caution, as important differences exist between species. When possible, we have pointed out exceptions to our general models, but in many instances, reproductive parameters have been measured for only a few species. We will focus on reproductive aspects of species most likely to be encountered by veterinarians, marine biologists, and marine mammal caretakers, working with animals in managed care settings.
