ABSTRACT

The Lip region is one of the aesthetically most important areas for facial enhancement. The lips and eyes have eternally been highlighted as the two most beautiful regions of the human face. Cosmetic lip augmentation consists of the enlargement and reshaping of otherwise normal upper or lower lips. The aim is to improve the three-dimensional relationship with the nose, teeth, and surrounding facial structures at rest, as well as during animation and speech. Aging, photo-damage, hereditary factors, and smoking contribute to volume loss, perioral rhytides, and prominence of mentolabial folds. The skin of the lip is supremely exposed to the exposome, with triggers such as sunlight, infrared, and pollution playing a major role in the aging process of the cosmetically sensitive and highly animated region. The overlying skin folds and creases are likewise determined by underlying vascular arcades, with the relationship between perioral wrinkles and fat loss described in the literature.
