ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the prevalence of teen pregnancy, specifically in the United States. Trends over the past several decades in both adolescent pregnancy rates and contraceptive use are discussed. Contributing factors including barriers which adolescents may face when seeking appropriate reproductive care and socioeconomic and racial disparities are also examined. Obstetric outcomes which may be more common in adolescent pregnancies are addressed, as well as counseling methods and management tactics that may be specific to an adolescent population.
