ABSTRACT

Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic that can have lifelong health consequences. Obese girls are at risk for menstrual dysfunction, endometrial cancer, polycystic ovarian syndrome, infertility, and risky sexual behaviors. This chapter focuses on specific considerations when caring for obese adolescent females, including mental health screening, evaluations for menstrual irregularities, contraceptive options to maximize efficacy and minimize side effects, bariatric surgery considerations, and treatment/prevention strategies that target the entire family.
