ABSTRACT

Orang Asli is a minority community in Malaysia and a native community in Peninsular Malaysia. They speak a unique language, practice different customs, and have a different system of knowledge and practice from the mainstream society. The community lives in the outback, which results in the lack of infrastructure facilities, and therefore they are largely dependent on forests. As a result, the society has been backward compared to the mainstream society. Development efforts are being undertaken by the Malaysian government to develop the Orang Asli community so that they are not plagued by poverty and development dysfunction. The Orang Asli community of Semaq Beri located in the vicinity of Lake Kenyir, Hulu Terengganu, faced this problem, and various efforts have been made for their development. On the basis of this development problem, a study was conducted with the aim of investigating the development programs undertaken in Kampung Sungai Berua. Qualitative methods are used for this study. A one-month study was conducted on the basis of a preliminary study by collecting interview data, data from observations and document studies. Informants were determined through purposeful sampling and selected on the basis of their knowledge of development programs that have been conducted. The findings show that development programs and projects have been carried out on the Orang Asli Semaq Beri community since 1960. Economic, social, and placement developments have been made to the community. Several projects and development programs have been conducted, and the findings show that a number of development programs are still underway and some development programs have been stopped.
