ABSTRACT

In this study, we analyze the influence of political crisis prevailing in Catalonia on the sphere of regional and national tourism. The representatives of travel agencies, airlines, and hotel businesses are witnessing the decline in tourist flows in Catalonia and other regions of Spain. This is explained by the drive for Catalan independence and by demonstrations and public unrest followed by secession. We consider the prospects for the recovery of the industry in the context of an unstable political situation. A peer–review method was applied in the survey to study the role and influence of the situation in Catalonia on domestic and foreign tourist flows, along with the use of calculation and analytical methods involving monitoring, measurement, analysis, and comparison of statistical and economic indicators. The results of this study provide some insights into the fact that there is a connection between the domestic policy of the country and the tourism sector, and that political crises have a negative impact on the service sector, especially if it is targeting foreign consumers.
