Soils of central-eastern Europe have developed under the predominating influence of podzolization and acidification processes. Soils of Europe have been virtually exposed for a long period of time to large emissions of trace pollutants. Consequently, the net mass balance of trace metals indicates an enrichment in surface soils of some regions. Depending upon the source of metal loading, the enrichment factor for metals vary from less than 10 to over 100 (or more) times.
