ABSTRACT

With the aging population and increasing prevalence of coronary artery disease in the elderly, the need for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is increasing. Due to increased morbidity associated with coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, the majority of octogenarians and nonagenarians undergo PCI. This chapter summarizes the burden of coronary artery disease, rationale for revascularization, and outcomes of PCI in the elderly in various settings such as ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), stable ischemic heart disease (SIHD), and cardiogenic shock.
