ABSTRACT

Crohn's disease may present with different clinical phenotypes affecting any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. Perianal disease is mainly characterized by fistulas and abscesses. Medical therapies, immunosuppressants, and biologic therapy, show limited efficacy and surgery represents a possible invasive alternative in case of treatment refractoriness. The use of allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells, thanks to their immunomodulatory and potential tissue repair effect, have shown encouraging results in terms of symptom remission and complete healing of perianal fistulas as well as a favorable safety profile.
