ABSTRACT

HSCT is an intensive cytotoxic treatment and significant transplant-related toxicities are inevitable. Careful pretransplant evaluation and supportive care are important during all phases of the procedure, which should be delivered in specialized and accredited centers. Multidisciplinary collaboration between the transplant team and relevant disease specialists is key to optimizing care and outcomes according to specific autoimmune diseases. This chapter summarizes the organizational aspects of the transplant program, infrastructure, personnel, pretransplant preparations, counselling and workup, early complications and their supportive care management, all of which are essential to delivering patients safely through the HSCT procedure, with special consideration of the unique aspects of the HSCT care pathway of patients with autoimmune diseases.
