ABSTRACT

The secretion of extracellular vesicles (EVs) is a fundamental mechanism of cell-to-cell communication. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) secrete EVs that are implicated in their anti-inflammatory, proangiogenic and antifibrotic effects. As a result, there is increasing interest in using MSC-derived EVs as therapeutic subcellular products. The first sections of this chapter cover general concepts on EV nomenclature, biogenesis, and cargo. Following sections focus on the characterization and mechanisms of action of MSC-derived EVs, including clinical trials with MSC-EVs.
