      ABSTRACT

During the final examination of Tanetta Andersson her third semester of doctoral studies, suicide lanced into her life on a Tuesday evening. It ripped away a friend who was a sentinel person in her life. They shared a similar immigrant background, but differed in age and other characteristics, yet bonded around the characteristics had in common. After being moved around to several countries during her childhood, family settled in the United States when she was twelve years old. In her freshmen French class, she barely said a word. During her graduate studies, medical sociology and other cognate courses exposed her to a group of scholars and thinkers who also applied their "quality of mind" to mental and physical illness experiences. Sociologists, of course, are familiar with Durkheim's classic study of suicide, which illustrates a sociological approach to factors outside of individuals, which precede suicide.
