ABSTRACT

Managers of facilities are faced with many different responsibilities when overseeing the management of the animal care programs at their institutions. These will vary based on the type of facility that they are overseeing, as well as the species and type of research that is being conducted. Monitoring of a satellite facility for compliance is the role of the animal oversight body, usually called the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); however, the veterinary staff should play a role in ensuring that animal care standards are appropriate for the species being housed. Cage sanitation practices in a satellite facility must meet the requirements of the Guide and, if applicable, the Animal Welfare Regulations (AWR). With any satellite that is run by research staff, training must be conducted to ensure that they are following all local, state, and federal regulations and policies with regards to care and use of animals.
