ABSTRACT

Active and intelligent films for food packaging are typically prepared using the casting technique, which can produce films efficiently at a low cost. Bacterial contamination is a threat of considerable proportion in both medicine and the food industry, being one of the leading causes of infections and foodborne diseases. Bio-based packaging for food is mostly made from naturally occurring renewable polymers or natural polymers blended with artificial biodegradable polymers that have a good film and coating-forming properties. In food packaging applications, it is important that biopolymer films demonstrate excellent mechanical properties. Academics and the food industry have been searching for technologies and methods to produce high-quality products that self-monitor their quality. A biopolymer film that is suitable for food packaging applications will typically demonstrate mechanical properties that are comparable to that of the polymers that are in commercial use. Natural antioxidants exhibit beneficial effects when used in food packaging.
