ABSTRACT

Ian Milne Richardson’s main passion was educating the next generation of medical professionals. In 1952, Richardson relocated to Aberdeen where he worked as a senior lecturer in social medicine. Public health and social medicine were the subjects Richardson undertook further at higher education level and he was awarded an MD in 1953. This was followed up by him receiving a PhD at the University of Aberdeen in 1956 on the subject ‘health of men in heavy industry’. Richardson applied for the post of reader against 43 other applicants, most of whom were general practitioners with little to no academic teaching experience. When he was awarded the post of reader it caused discontent amongst those who preferred to have appointed a senior practising general practitioner. Throughout his lifetime, Richardson engaged in many research projects, some of which focused on the effectiveness of clinical placements at general practices during university.
