ABSTRACT

The Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire was initially intended for use as a measure of clinical trial outcome but has since been considered useful in the monitoring of patients in clinical practice. In 1983, Martin Roland returned to the Newmarket Road practice in Cambridge, taking up a position as a partner. Initially, he continued teaching at St Thomas’ Hospital for two sessions a week, before instead taking up the part-time position as director of studies at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, where he worked until 1992. Roland found the biomedical-oriented environment in Cambridge a challenging one to conduct research and development in general practice. Following completion of his doctorate, Roland’s research interests changed to focus more on understanding and improving the delivery of primary care within the National Health Service. Once Quality and Outcomes Framework had started Roland took on an analytical role.
