ABSTRACT

Elsie Rosemary Rue attended the Royal Free Medical School for Women. She started when she was 17 years old and whilst there as a student, in 1950 married Roger Rue, a Royal Air Force pilot instructor. Kingsley Firth, a general practitioner whom Rue had met whilst completing the psychiatry course at Cowley Road Hospital, offered her a job in an industrial part of Oxford. She was one of only three doctors overseeing the care of 11,000 patients, many of whom were workers at the Cowley motor plant. Rue was a strong advocate for women within the profession. During the 1960s she developed a scheme which grew in popularity across the United Kingdom. Rue became the assistant regional medical officer in 1965, then progressed in 1971 to senior assistant, becoming the regional medical officer in 1973. Rue had a successful career. Apart from writing many papers she was awarded an honorary MA from the University of Oxford.
