ABSTRACT

Thymus vulgaris is a flowering plant of the mint family Lamiaceae. It grows up to 15-30 cm tall by 40 cm wide. The vernacular names of T. vulgaris L. are wild thyme, creeping thyme, mountain thyme, common thyme, farigola, garden thyme, herbatimi, herbathymi, mother of thyme, red thyme, rubbed thyme, thick leaf thyme, thym, thymian, thyme, timi, and tomillo. The essential oil from T. vulgaris shows a high content of oxygenated monoterpenes and low contents of monoterpene hydrocarbons, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, and oxygenated sesquiterpenes. The essential oils obtained from T. vulgaris L. harvested at four biological process stages were evaluated for their biological activity and chemical components. T. vulgaris is a good companion crop that repels cabbage fly, whitefly, and aphids. Only a few thyme species are used as landscape ornamentals. T. vulgaris is a good source of essential oil, having pesticidal, insecticidal, larvicidal, and mosquitocidal activity.
