ABSTRACT

Science is a process through which observations and theories are constantly checked against each other to develop more accurate understanding of nature. This characteristic developmental process of science has been true for both Eastern and Western branches of science, including in the medical domain. This chapter aims to show that at least two branches of Oriental medicine, Chinese medicine and Indian medicine and in addition to present a précis of the scientific nature of the classical teachings of these two medical systems. It describes a bridge that allows for incorporating Ayurvedic medicine into the same scientific paradigm as Chinese medicine. Pulse diagnosis, being one of the oldest and most characteristic methods employed in Chinese medicine, lends itself to explanations based on resonance theory. Like Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine has a five-element theory, but these two theories, which share the same label, are not equivalent, and any attempt to correlate one with the other will only lead to erroneous results.
