ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a detailed discussion on craniofacial, airway, and sleep assessment. It also provides a brief consideration of craniofacial development and its effect on airway overall health. The chapter presents an introduction to practical issues regarding assessment and treatment of common craniofacial pain disorders and discusses the role of the oropharynx and airway. It explains the role of craniofacial growth on temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is yet another prominent orofacial pain disorder with various signs and symptoms associated with it. The TMJ and muscles of mastication function together as a unit is one of the most heavily utilized structures in the human body. Physical medicine treatments address the structural aspects of temporomandibular and craniocervical disorders and may include myofascial (dry needling) and craniosacral physical therapy, orthopedic correction for the cervical spine, muscle education, and TMJ pain relief therapies.
