ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we have reviewed computational methods to identify metal-binding proteins using sequence and/or structural information. A methodology to generate putative metal-binding sequence motifs is described. Also, a list of available tools and databases for the prediction of metal-binding sites is given. Understanding the genome features of the organisms in metal-rich environments will provide insights into their adaptations, which will help in designing effective metal bioremediation strategies. The use of “omics” and systems biology approaches will aid in revealing interactions within the microbial community and the surrounding environment. A few case studies using these approaches are highlighted here.
