ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the literature and is a compilation of the data to test the hypothesis that urban soil organic carbon (SOC) is related to Jenny's soil forming factors. A literature search was conducted to identify studies and gather data on SOC in urban soils. The Academic Search Complete (EBSCO), JSTOR, Web of Knowledge, and Google Scholar search engines were utilized to find relevant articles. Climate is a major soil forming factor and has strong influence on primary production and decomposition and consequently SOC. Soil classification to order in United States Soil Taxonomy was investigated for a relationship with urban SOC. Concentration and stock of SOC may be impacted by other soil properties through effects on primary production and decomposition. The proposed hypothesis was that soil texture, density, and pH would be correlated to urban SOC.
