ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the investigations, premedication, intravenous access and monitors of the brain abscess. It also describes the induction, positioning, intravenous fluids and postoperative analgesia of the brain abscess. The chapter explains the goals of anesthesia to prevent rise in intracranial pressure or brain edema, to maintain adequate cerebral perfusion pressure and to maintain hemodynamic stability. It discusses the drugs, namely mannitol, hypertonic saline, phenytoin and vasopressors. The chapter focuses on the intraoperative concerns like tense brain, seizures, cardiac arrhythmias and hemodynamic instability. It also focuses on the postoperative concerns like pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), hemodynamic instability, pneumocephalus and seizures. The chapter also explains the patients with preoperative impaired level of consciousness, unprotected airway, and hemodynamic instability may require mechanical ventilation. It also discusses that the patients can be extubated with controlled intraoperative management.
