ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the investigations, premedication, intravenous access and monitors of the craniosynostosis. It also describes the induction, intravenous fluids, reversal or elective mechanical ventilation and postoperative analgesia of the craniosynostosis. The chapter discusses the goals of anesthesia to facilitate rapid and smooth induction of anesthesia, to prevent rise in intracranial pressure, to maintain adequate cerebral perfusion pressure and to facilitate smooth emergence from anesthesia. It focuses on the drugs like mannitol, vasopressors, intraventricular (IV) paracetamol and antiemetics. The chapter explains the intraoperative concerns like tense brain, risk of massive blood loss, risk of venous air embolism in semi-sitting position and risk of postural hypotension in semi-sitting position. It also discusses the postoperative concerns like pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), and abnormal coagulation profile following major blood loss. The chapter also focuses on the patients with massive intraoperative blood loss and hemodynamic instability may require mechanical ventilation.
