ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the total content of nickel (Ni) in different soils, geochemical fractions and mobilization of Ni in soils, and the impact of different inorganic amendments on geochemical fractions and mobilization/immobilization of Ni. It also discusses the impact of soil amendments on phytoavailability and plant tissue concentrations of Ni in different soils. The chapter compares the results, which are crucial for soil scientists and readers to understand the geochemical behavior of Ni in soil; this will in turn help in understanding Ni mobilization, hazard, and ecotoxicity. It explores the impact of soil amendments on mobilization and phytoavailability of Ni in soils is required, in order to know suitable mobilizing/immobilizing agents for Ni-contaminated soils. The Ni content in soils is highly dependent on its contents in the parent material. More important, determining the geochemical fractions of Ni in soils can be helpful in understanding the dynamics of shift from one pool to another, especially before and after remediation of Ni-contaminated.
