ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the impact of a leader, the differences between leading and managing, common traits of very effective leaders, situational leadership, and how to form and maintain high-performing teams. It also covers how to deal with difficult people, how to personalize your own leadership style, and how to enhance your own personal performance. Leaders are expected to work together across programs, technical groups, and other artificial boundaries to fully leverage an enterprise's capabilities. Organizations with strong leadership and weak management are no better than organizations with active management and poor leadership. The challenge is to combine strong leadership and active management into a unifying force that moves teams toward the envisioned future. DiSC is a behavioral assessment tool based on the theory of psychologist William Marston, focusing on four clearly different behavioral traits, namely dominance, influence, steadiness, compliance.
