ABSTRACT

Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is defined by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) as 'the formalized application of modeling to support system requirements, design, analysis, verification and validation activities beginning in the conceptual design phase and continuing throughout development and later life cycle phases'. This chapter focuses on the emerging area of MBSE for space systems will give project managers an overview of it, shows how it can be useful for the project team, and describes some of the methodologies and tools that might be a good fit for a project. In MBSE a system model is built that stores not only the system information but the underlying relationships. MBSE can be a cost saver in the amount of time needed to develop, review, and maintain required documents. A model facilitates communication among the team and can be used to communicate the system to external stakeholders and reviewers as well.
