ABSTRACT
After an introductory section about biofuels as a global change mitigation option, this chapter firstly introduces the reader to the methodology of environmental life cycle assessment (LCA). Afterward, the recently proposed life cycle sustainability assessment methodology capable of including further sustainability aspects is also briefly presented. The application of LCA methods to the production of biofuels has some important specific aspects to be considered that are discussed in the text followed by a discussion on indirect land-use change (iLUC) impacts. Then the most relevant LCA studies applied to biofuels are presented and the chapter ends with some concluding remarks.
