ABSTRACT

Considering the variety of biofuel options for transport, this chapter comprises an overview of the most relevant production processes and technologies for liquid and gaseous biofuels and their current status quo: starting from vegetable oils or biodiesel (FAME) and HVO/HEFA thereof, alcohols based on fermentation, biomethane via digestion or synthesis, to fuels based on pyrolytic and hydrothermal processes, hydrogen, as well as advanced fuels like synthetic fuels. In order to reach the targets of the Paris Agreement on a global level, all renewable low-carbon fuel options are required. There are many synergies between smart bioenergy and power-based products.
