ABSTRACT

The first and most obvious advantage of writing for a specific demographic is that it sets basic parameters. Good, socially conscious writing isn't just better for one’s audience; it's good for his/her bottom line. Consider hiring a diversity consultant to help edit one’s narrative or, if one has the means, hire additional writing staff who are part of the demographic he/she is trying to portray. As for audience, they'll get the benefit of a writer who took time and care to represent themes they care about. That might not seem like much, but it can make the difference between a "meh" experience and a player's favorite game. Understanding whom one’s writing for is a key skill in any art form, and games are no exception. While demographics can be a useful tool for understanding audience, they can also be used as an excuse to make questionable creative decisions.
