ABSTRACT

Educational videogames have been around nearly as long as videogames themselves but our language for understanding their unique value proposition to learners, teachers, and parents has increased significantly. When considering the role of writing and storytelling in educational content, it's important to remember that language is central to our human experience of learning itself, and learning is a key to our survival as a species. One important concept to bear in mind when writing for educational mobile games particularly pertaining to story is Lexile level. The specificity that applies to game audiences for physical interactions also applies to language. When writing for an educational game, or creating any kind of content intended to be experienced in schools, integrating with pedagogy—which is a support for teachers who may want to use it—is critical. The chapter concludes with exploring some of the complexities specific to writing for certain learning subjects.
