ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the motivations, objectives and skills that one can bring abroad. Global health experiences (GHEs) provide opportunities for personal and professional growth, exchange of information and development of lifelong relationships and friendships. Trainees often develop fresh insights and attitudes with exposure to a broad spectrum of health and wellness, illness and disease, healthcare systems and social conditions unique to regions with different ethnic groups in resource-poor settings. Going abroad has the reverse benefit of providing a greater appreciation of social challenges at home. Many leading global health experts have utilized their considerable expertise while working abroad to address issues at home, in domestic under-resourced areas. One of the most challenging questions is funding for a GHE abroad. The good news is that over the past 25 years, there has been increasing amounts of money set aside for global health travel. The most common means for most people is still self-funding.
