ABSTRACT

An ideal global health experience does not just happen overnight. Planning a global health experience requires planning and thought. This chapter outlines what steps need to be thought through, what actions one need to take going abroad and what are the key things not to miss before one go on that global health journey. Institutions now ask students or personnel to fill out health self-assessments, risk assessment and management packages, statements of responsibility, releases and identification of insurance policy forms. Travel may be booked through websites offering the best deals. However, travel agents may be more helpful with advice on specific travel routes or more complicated itineraries. There are many ways to communicate with home today compared to even 15 years ago. Communication by cellular phone is significantly easier and cheaper, as well as texting, WhatsApp, Skype/g-chat and e-mail communications.
