ABSTRACT

This chapter will provide an introduction to research ethics and its practical implications for the responsible conduct of research. Topics include historical milestones in research ethics, basic ethical principles as introduced through the Belmont Report, roles and responsibilities of the Institutional Review Board (IRB), responsible conduct of research, and research misconduct. Examples, case studies, and small group activities will foster familiarity with ethical principles and their application in public health research and practice. Readers will understand IRB protocol review standards and standards for responsible conduct of research. They will also identify misconduct and other unethical research practices.
