ABSTRACT
This chapter defines epidemiology and discusses some major contributions of epidemiology. Frameworks for understanding disease process are explained using basic epidemiologic reasoning. Observational studies are compared and contrasted with experimental studies, including randomized controlled clinical trials. Different study designs are described followed by guidelines for evaluating disease causation. Finally, basic epidemiologic measures are presented with interpretation.
