ABSTRACT

In this chapter, research is defined, as well as the steps of the research process. Readers will be able to develop a research question and corresponding hypothesis, to identify the independent and dependent variables, and to determine the type of data to be collected in order to answer the research question. Criteria for causality and bias are also discussed. In the chapter, methods for data collection are discussed, along with the two types of data that can be collected: quantitative and qualitative data. In addition, the differences between the types of data are explained. Some basics of study design are included as well.
