ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the use of Data Analysis in Research, especially in institutions devoted to scientific research and innovation, and in particular, universities and research centers, in an age of competitiveness, globalization, and transformation into knowledge economies. It elaborates more on each of the elements mingled in the notion of Research Analytics and comment on the main issues around them. The book reports on Web of Science (WoS) and provides an introduction to Scopus. Scientometrics applies Data Analytics methods and tools to Bibliometric databases to calculate scientific indicators in science, technology, and innovation. It then describes the general features of Google Scholar (GS), search engine in terms of document typologies, disciplines, and coverage, as well as some Bibliometric aids like Google Scholar Metrics and Google Scholar Citations, based on the GS database, and others like H Index Scholar, etc., developed by third parties.
