ABSTRACT

This chapter authored by an infectious disease clinician provides a case based format and insight into the interpretation of routine microbiology test results. She has focused on the routinely and commonly available methods of gram stain, culture, antigen testing, antibody testing and nucleic acid amplification tests. As in other chapters, the significance of choosing appropriate type, volume and handling of the sample is emphasized using actual patient scenarios and correlating microbiological results to the clinical picture adds a refreshing dimension to this book with the goal of bench to bedside connection.
