ABSTRACT

The collision of ice with a ship is studied for a ship without icebreaking design, sailing in the Arctic, in ice channel opened by an icebreaking ship with sharp ice floes and ice packs. This chapter considers the dynamic collision response of ship side structure to the collision with floating ice sheets. The ship or offshore structure subjected to the ice is a focused issue. Some classification societies and national administrations give design rule or guidance for ship structure subjected ice. The ice-breaking load is very large compared with the load in a ship sailing in a sea area with floating ice or icebergs. As the ship is sailing in the Arctic sea, the ship side structure will be off the route and collided with the ice sheet of the ice route. Ships may be vulnerable to interactions with the ice and to other effects of low temperatures, which can lead to damage to the ship structure.
