ABSTRACT

Wind energy is a clean and renewable energy source that has been used in agriculture for centuries. The origins of harnessing wind as energy began over 3000 years ago with the invention of the windmill. Windmills were the only mechanical energy sources that drove equipment and tools in many farms until the beginning of the 20th century. Direct wind pumping technology can be used for water supply in farms, aquaculture, wild animal farming, irrigation and drainage. But the old type constructions have some disadvantages in comparison with electric wind pump technologies. The most effective type for a given application depends on the local wind conditions, the water source and the aim of the water pumping. The other solution for water pumping and irrigation is the wind pumping system with electric energy storage. Electric wind pumps are applicable for all uses of water supply, irrigation and drainage. Solar-wind electric power systems for irrigation and drainage can be suggested for large-scale applications.
