ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an overview of the present aquaponics techniques available today, focusing on the direct use of renewable resources and replication potential in different climates and economic environments. The main bottlenecks of each production method are presented, and suggestions of research areas for future development connected to United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2015–2030 are given. The importance goals present mark a significant new direction of global development as they are not only aimed at improving the living standards of people in the global South, but the SDGs are for all UN member nations and focus on living within the planetary limits, and achieving wellbeing for all people as well as nature. Global food security is characterized by four major distinctions, namely food availability, physical and economic access to food, food utilization, and food stability.
